The CT GOP doesn’t align with MAGA values even if the national GOP has Trump’s articulation of those values as their platform. The national platform can be found here.
I’m too new to involvement with polyticks to have a picture of exactly what goes on at CT State Central. And now I’m curious. Are there records of these meetings? Can ordinary Republicans see them? I’d like to think so. Much as we can watch C-SPAN and the live unfolding of politics in our state capital, the machinations of our parties, [both Republican and Democrat] should be accessible. Looking at such records wouldn’t stop backroom deals, but it would make them more difficult to pull off.
I’ve said before that MAGA doesn’t belong to the president. Donald Trump and his team looked at what was important to the majority of Americans [themselves included] and put that into words, words that became the platform of the more conservative of the two parties.
‘Conservative’ is sometimes viewed as a divisive word. Certainly the CT GOP seems to think so. But ‘conservative’ means hanging on to what is valuable and has taken a great deal of work to build. In this, the current administration is in agreement. But they, and the majority of Americans want to build as well, and aren’t afraid to tear down what’s not working, such as universities that harbor racist ideologies, and policies and bureaucratic departments that allow the theft of taxpayer monies.
That’s not very conservative to be sure.
So here’s a question for the CT GOP: What values do they stand for? I was told that they simply support the national platform, and it’s obvious that SOME of our elected Republicans do exactly that. Rep. Dauphinias was a brilliant stand for children when she read excerpts from books available to children in their school libraries on the house floor. This clever action elicited indignation from house Democrats and earned CT national attention and well-deserved mockery on no less than Greg Gutfeld, and cheers from Riley Gaines and LibsofTiktok. Rob Sampson has been a loud and consistent voice for all the people of CT. But not all of our elected Republicans seem to agree with that national platform. I asked Erin Stewart on X how she felt about child transition and boys playing in girl’s sports. No answer
.
But the Senators and Representatives aren’t the same as the Republican party. The GOP in CT wouldn’t allow any of those reps or senators to endorse president Trump during the election of 2024. Many of our Republican reps have done their level best to stand for the communities they were elected to represent, but the best they’ve been able to do is fight a holding action against the worst of Democrat policies.
If the Republican Party in CT really supported the national GOP values, then the PARTY - including all of State Central - should be advocating - loudly - for the removal of the TRUST act, the right to bear arms, the removal of any DEI programs, the removal of any sexual content in schools, for getting boys out of girls sports, for cleaning up the train-wreck that is our voter rolls, same-day voting, proof of citizenship for voter registration at the DMV, and hand-counted ballots.
You’d think they could at least do some press releases…
Is there corruption there? This is speculation until proof is offered. Yet, the level of ineffectiveness of the party can’t help but make one wonder if there’s something other than raw hopelessness that keeps the CT GOP from acting as the leaders they claim to be. Certainly this is the speculation on the national level, but party leadership - Ben Proto in particular - does nothing to dispel the idea. Sure, according to all accounts, he’s a ‘nice guy,’ and maybe that’s exactly what he is, and all he is.
But even if that’s the one and only truth, a ‘nice guy’ isn’t going to protect women from predators in their bathrooms and dressing rooms, protect ordinary people from drug dealers and human traffickers, create the actual growth and fiscal responsibility our state needs in order to outgrow our debt, and get us to valid elections.
The CT GOP needs leadership, values, and responsibility. Some people in the party are willing to do that. The ones that aren’t should resign. If they won’t, that might just mean they have reasons to stay which have nothing to do with American Western values.
