Yesterday, the husband and I went to the Maricostas Preserve in New Preston. We didn’t know what to expect, and a large, crunchy snowfield wasn’t it!
We got there fairly late on a cloudy afternoon, but it had it’s own beauty. I’ll bet it’s great in summer, certainly the hiking trails accessable on the other side of the field get high ratings. That mountain had some gorgeous crags that I couldn’t capture with my phone because of the low light.
Those aren’t birches. The color was a pale green, and turned out to be lichen. We traversed the field, getting some exercise and fresh air, but since it was icy and niether of us had on footware appropriate to the task, we headed back to the car after an hour. With an hour to spare before our dinner date with friends, we took a random drive around Litchfield county. First, we found what had to have been the smallest drive through restaurant ever. We admitted to being confused, but entertained.
Then a drive around Lake Waramaug, which intersects Washington, Kent, and Warren. The lake is ringed with some very pricey real estate, largely unoccupied for the winter. I have never seen so many ‘lake houses,’ ie, small buildings that would have been pool houses if they weren’t on a lake. I didn’t take any pictures, but did get some pretty ones of the lake.
It was a pretty drive. Then we had dinner at The White Horse Country Pub and Tavern. We’ve eatne there before and the food’s great, as is the service. Just make sure to make a reservation! The place is popular!
