On the day he took office, the President Donald Trump declared an energy emergency because the Biden administration had restricted the production of oil and gas. Biden took 650 million acres of offshore oil land out of production by executive order.
On Valentine’s Day, the president signed an executive order creating the Energy Dominance Council. The council will be chaired by Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum and vice-chaired by Secretary of Energy Chris Write. They will be supported by the Department of Environmental Protection.
The purpose is to “oversee the path to U.S. ENERGY DOMINANCE by cutting red tape, enhancing private sector investments across all sectors of the Economy, and by focusing on INNOVATION over longstanding, but totally unnecessary, regulation.”
Many or these energy resources are on public lands. Sec. Burgum said there were 700 million acres of land with sub-surface minerals, and nearly 2 billion in offshore assets. He described it as “the biggest balance sheet in the world.” with 36 trillion in debt, we will need those assets to claw our way out.
But the big news it that the administration is - after a 20 year delay - going to build a pipeline for natural gas through NY state. This will bring down energy prices by 50 to 60%. They think 9 to 12 months to complete.
Currently, CT consumes 3-4000 megawatts a day
Millstone produces about 2000 megawatts per day Wind and solar CAN produce 1400 megawatts per day. Last year solar and wind produced 4.1667% of CT’s total power use. The rest is natural gas.
Any excess energy we have to buy, often from Hydro Quebec.
Putting barriers in front of energy makes it more expensive. This includes excessive regulations. In evaluating energy policy, we have to choose between whether or not, we are promoting human flourishing, or if we are trying to have no human impact on the planet.
The standard should be human flourishing. The alternative is the majority of the population returing to the stone age.
If CT is going to get out of the debt incurred by the current administration, we need to attract business. The biggest area of growth is in AI which requires huge amounts of electricity. For example, Microsoft has a deal to re-commission Three Mile Island Nuclear Plant reactor #1. They will buy ALL of it. Cheap, abundant energy is the answer to so many of our problems.
We shouldn’t be worrying about pollution, or climate change. Any problem that technology creates, it can also fix.
