Kent Falls is one of the many reasons to love Connecticut. As my husband says, ‘we have a little bit of everything.’ The state park has its own Wikipedia page, and you can get any history there. My husband took me there when we first started dating, on a motorcycle he’d borrowed for the day.
We tried to visit again in 2020. The park was closed. An outdoor space, closed.
We turned around and went back to a paved trail head we’d passed on the way there. We weren’t the only ones. That path was moderately busy, and our fellow pedestrians were friendly.
We finally went back in January. The day was clear and cold, cold enough that the falls were partly frozen. A dusting of snow covered the ground. The park looked so different that I didn’t remember our trip from 20-years ago.
While there were a few people viewing the scene above, the path the headed up along the cascade was nearly empty. We saw no one as we hiked upward, stopping at viewing platfroms that hadn’t been there when we first visited.
Each platform provided a new and spectacular view, along with the sound of the river gurgling below the ice.
We only passed one couple on the trail going down. The day was sweet and bright.
I love New England. I grew up in Pennsylvania, but my mother is from Maine. I love the cold, I love the seasons, and as my husband says, Connecticut has a little bit of everything.
